DOCUMEN:TUESDAY - “Dive!: Living Off of America’s Waste

    WATCH INSTANTLY

I actually watched 3 documentaries today, but could only comment on one, so I picked Dive! seeing as how it is the most original and the most experimental of the three. The other two were “Hearts of Darkness” which I had to rent from the DVD Queue and then “Forks Over Knives” which was actually much more informational, but I was a little distracted as I sat through it… anyway

Dive! is a shorter documentary, and comes from someone who appears to be more of a hobbyist than a filmmaker (which is fine). The film comments highly on the amount of wasted food and the cost of that food in reference to the amount of under fed or malnourished people who also live in America.

I think Dive! was simple and in a way educational, but it’s the type of film where at the end they ask you to raise awareness or be more thoughtful, which is always a weak call to action in my opinion. If you can’t find any leverage in the situation, it means you’re no further along than the other hundreds of people who had the same complaint but no way to solve the problem either. I appreciate this movie and efforts similar to theirs, but would be even happier if I had a solution to the problem that wasn’t simple “Eat Trash”.

    [STATUS REPORT]

BROAD vs. NICHE - I think the premise is simple and the length is short enough that anybody could watch this film. American’s who live outside of the big city or in the suburbs might even find some of this content inspiring or at the very least it should stir in you some type of emotion. But at the same time, it’s not too controversial and it doesn’t attack any political parties or types of people so I think this is one the whole family can enjoy.

WATCHABILITY - Unfortunately some of the story remains a little predictable. They take food out of a dumpster and believe it or not, no one can speak on behalf of the corporations. Thanks Michael Moore. Haha, just kidding. But they do do a good job of offering fresh cut scenes and stop motion when walking through some of the facts. So It could be worse.

WHEN TO WATCH - I watched it at the end of my night on a Tuesday and thought that was just fine. It’s an easy during the week film because it requires such a short commitment (52 minutes) and it’s fun film. And if you’re anything like me, maybe even give yourself a little time to go exploring afterwards seeing as how they do showcase a lot of great food that might be waiting around in a dumpster near you!
